Community empowerment and Scotland’s environment

Find out about our approach and the opportunities for your community to get more involved in environmental issues.

Helping more communities to care for local nature assets is a top priority for the Scottish Government and Scottish Natural Heritage.

Discover the many ways in which your community can get involved in looking after your local environment. Our list of ideas could inspire you to start taking action today.

Taking the initiative might seem daunting at first, but community networks, toolkits and other types of support are available to help you.

There are also plenty of ways that you and your community can contribute to SNH work. Come along to a Board meeting or help us to plan and manage Scotland’s protected areas.

The Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015 has extended new powers to Scotland’s communities. Find out why and how your community might make a participation request or asset transfer request.

You can also access our own public register of land holdings, or view a map of the land that SNH owns or leases across Scotland.
