The Big Butterfly Count

Join in the biggest butterfly survey in the world and help take the pulse of nature. 

Simply drop into the visitor centre to pick up your butterfly ID sheet and recording form, find a nice bright (preferably sunny) spot and count butterflies for 15 minutes.  

Booking information 

  • Booking: Not essential, just drop in to the Forvie visitor centre and collect a sheet.

  • All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring food/drink if you would like to.
  • Dogs must be kept on a lead during events.
  • All NatureScot events are free of charge but a donation is always welcome.

    The Ythan Estuary on the east coast of Scotland approximately 16 miles north of Aberdeen.

    By road - head north out of Aberdeen on the A90, turning onto the A975 to Cruden Bay.  

    Parking is available at Waterside car park, which is 1 mile north of Newburgh.  Parking is restricted to 2.2m width, no height restriction.
