Species licensing A–Z guide

We can license, for certain specific purposes, actions that would otherwise constitute an offence against a protected species.

NatureScot is responsible for almost all species licensing in Scotland, except:

  • seal licensing
  • some aspects of dolphin, whale and porpoise licensing
  • fisheries licensing

Marine Scotland deals instead with most licensing in the marine environment.

Explore our A–Z listing here, to find out about licensing for a specific protected species, including how to apply for each type of licence.

Or view our summary of the licensing situation in Scotland: Protected Species Licensing: Legislation, Appropriate Authorities and Licensing Purposes

We advise that you read the relevant standing advice relating to planning and development if applicable.
