Come and join the fun at Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Fife is holding an open day next week with a host of fun activities for all ages.

There will be a series of free walks throughout the day where visitors can learn more about the reserve’s wildlife:

  • 11am – Discover Tentsmuir’s birds of prey on an expert-led raptor walk. Boost your bird of prey knowledge and gain skills and techniques to identify these majestic birds.
  • 11.15am – Butterfly walk with Butterfly Conservation Scotland. Spot the wide range of butterflies that can be found at Tentsmuir NNR and learn more about them.
  • 1.30pm – Big Bug Safari. An event for all the family, come on a guided tour of the reserve to find a wide variety of bugs and insects with fun and interactive activities along the way.

These walks are free, but booking is essential and can be done via the Tentsmuir NNR Facebook page or by emailing [email protected].

There will also be a selection of children’s activities and crafts throughout the day, from building a ladybird house to making a shell butterfly, as well as a Big Beach Clean at 2pm with all equipment provided.

Marijke Leith, NatureScot’s reserve manager, said: “Tentsmuir is a special place and our open day is a great opportunity to connect with nature on your doorstep and get to know the reserve and its wildlife. From raptor identification to children’s crafts and expert butterfly walks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The forecast is looking promising so why not bring a picnic and make a day of it!”

The walks and activities are free, but entrance to the car park costs £4 with card and coins accepted.

    Tentsmuir Forest is 1½ miles (2.4 km) east of the B945 between Leuchars and Tayport in northeast Fife. Follow signs for Kinshaldy Beach. The entrance to the car park is at grid reference NO 498 242.

    The Forestry Commission car park costs £2 per vehicle, payable at the automatic barrier. You’ll need to have the correct change.
