Managing habitats and inspiring people

Loch Lomond NNR is managed by three partner organisations – NatureScot, the RSPB and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Each offers a different visitor experience.

NatureScot manages the wetlands on the northern side of the River Endrick and the woodlands on the islands of Clairinsh, Inchcailloch, Torrinch and Creinch.

The RSPB manages the Wards area to the south of the River Endrick. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park manage visitors on Inchcailloch.

Loch habitat

Our management of the islands focuses on two main areas. We want to see good regeneration in the woodlands and diverse ground flora. We achieve this by managing deer numbers to reduce their impact on the woodland. We also manage invasive species, including skunk cabbage, bamboo and rhododendron.

Managing invasive species is a key area of work in the wetland areas around the River Endrick. We remove as many invasive species as we can. We also graze these areas to allow native plants to flourish. This keeps the ground in good condition for breeding and wintering birds.

Engaging people with nature

The terrain in the area we manage is difficult to access. Therefore, we depend on our partners to provide a memorable experience for visitors at Loch Lomond NNR. Our focus is on encouraging and supporting volunteers who are keen to be involved in the management of the reserve.

Management planning

We plan our management carefully to make sure that the special qualities of the reserve thrive. In this way it will always give visitors an enjoyable experience and engage people with nature.
