What to see in your area

Each area of Scotland has its highlights. Discover what’s on your doorstep or at the next destination in your sights.

Dip into our area guides to explore the highlights of a particular part of Scotland. From north to south and west to east, Scotland varies hugely in its nature and landscapes.

Mighty sea cliffs in the Northern Isles support some of Britain’s most superb seabird colonies, and arctic-alpine plants thrive in the North Highlands. Yet, in Southern Scotland, you can walk among exotic species from the other side of the world, thanks to the warming Gulf Stream.

Far off the west coast is St Kilda, a series of islands so remote it’s hard to imagine that people lived here until the 1930s. In the east are sand dunes that constantly shift, revealing layers of history and creating landscapes that are never the same twice.
