Knockan Crag NNR - About the reserve
Knockan Crag is managed to inspire visitors about the dramatic landscapes and geology of this beautiful part of Scotland.
Managing habitats and inspiring people
Knockan Crag NNR is an amazing geological site in the North West Highlands Geopark. The reserve includes one of the clearest demonstrations of the Moine Thrust. First explained by geologists in the early 1900s, understanding the processes at work unravelled a significant geological mystery.
Interpreting the landscape
Our priority at Knockan Crag is inspiring visitors about the local geology. We focus on engaging with visitors. We use the reserve, and the surrounding landscape, to share the story of this area. At the reserve, we explain its complex geology and how geology shapes the landscape and the lives of the people who live here.
We also work with our partners, including the North West Highland Geopark. Through projects like the Rock Route, we can extend the reach of the reserve across the North-west Highlands.
Engaging people with nature
Our aim is for everyone visiting the reserve to have a memorable experience.
We keep visitor facilities in good condition and try to improve them over time. We also keep access to the reserve open and safe. A significant part of this is ensuring that the cliff face on the reserve is inspected regularly and maintained to reduce the risk from rock falls.
Management planning
We plan our management carefully to make sure that the special qualities of the reserve thrive. In this way it will always give visitors an enjoyable experience and engage people with nature.
