Big butterfly count 2026!
Become a citizen scientist and take part in the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count at St Cyrus NNR. Information about the project will be available in the Visitor Centre – just scan the QR code that will be on display, download the app and follow the instructions to record the butterflies you see.
All information gathered will help in protecting these beautiful flying creatures.
Booking information
- Booking: Not essential, just drop in to the St Cyrus Visitor Centre during opening times.
- All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
- Wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring food/drink if you would like to.
- Dogs must be kept on a lead during events.
- All NatureScot events are free of charge but a donation is always welcome.

Directions
To reach St Cyrus from Montrose, head 5 miles north on the A92 coastal road. St Cyrus NNR is signposted on the right, immediately before the Northwater Bridge over the River Esk. Follow the single track road for 1.5 miles to the car park and visitor centre. The nearest bus stop is in St Cyrus (1.5 miles) on the Aberdeen - Montrose bus route.
