Volunteer with SNH

Volunteering with Scottish Natural Heritage is a great way to help improve Scotland’s outdoors, learn new skills and inspire others.

Coronavirus update

To Our Volunteers

SNH and Scotland’s nature are extremely fortunate because of your fantastic support.  In line with current guidance from the Scottish Government we are letting you know that all volunteering activity with SNH needs to stop with immediate effect, unless it can be done safely whilst at home.  We are very grateful for your support and we wish you and your families good health.  Your Volunteer Supervisor will be in touch once volunteering can get going again.  If you have any queries about this please contact your supervisor.

Thank you for visiting our volunteer pages. Please drop an e-mail to [email protected] if you have a general interest in volunteering on one of our National Nature Reserves and we will let you know further details of upcoming opportunities.

Our Volunteers’ Handbook tells you everything you need to know about volunteering with us.

If what you read interests you, let us know that you’d like to become a volunteer by filling in our Volunteer Expression of Interest form.

You should email your completed form to [email protected].

We will then get in touch with you.

Among other options, we provide volunteer activities at our National Nature Reserves. We are currently looking for residential volunteers who truly care about the Scottish countryside to work on our NNRs who can commit to a minimum of 1 month.  In return, our volunteers get the chance to learn a whole manner of skills, and experience working in the spectacular landscapes of Scotland. The more time you stay with us the more jobs you will be likely to experience and the more you will learn.

Support for environmental volunteering

As well as offering opportunities to volunteer with SNH, we help other organisations to do the same. Our aim is to work with partners to develop a vibrant culture of environmental volunteering in Scotland.

Our support includes:

  • funding for The Conservation Volunteers – many of its projects involve young people and excluded or disadvantaged groups
  • helping the Volunteering Matters Action Earth campaign to enable more communities in Scotland to carry out environmental projects

We published a policy statement on environmental volunteering in 2008: Environmental Volunteering in Scotland – SNH Statement of Policy and Priorities
