Local natural heritage designations identify areas important to nature and people, usually within a local authority boundary.
Natural heritage sites on the doorstep let people enjoy the outdoors without having to travel far.
Local Nature Reserves help people to learn about and enjoy nature close to home. Local Nature Conservation Sites identify locally important natural heritage that development might damage. Local Landscape Areas protect and promote scenery that is cherished locally.
Most of Scotland’s country parks are close to our cities and towns, offering a convenient way to enjoy the outdoors and open-air recreation. Three regional parks provide larger areas to explore within reach of the central belt.
Local authorities make most local designations and often manage the sites. Designations may be known locally by other names, but they’re all used to direct planning policy and highlight local sites of interest.
