Site of Special Scientific Interest notices

Scottish Natural Heritage confirmed on 9 June 2020 that land at Correen Hills near Rhynie in Aberdeenshire is no longer a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).  This was because common gulls, the original reason for the SSSI, ceased breeding there in the early 2000s and there is little likelihood of them returning there to breed.

National Nature Reserve notices

No current notices.

We may also publish the notices we post on the Tell Me Scotland website. (Select Scottish Natural Heritage from the 'Choose organisation' list on the left side). You can sign up to receive Tell Me Scotland email alerts whenever notices are published that will affect the area where you live or work.

We must publish a notice in a local newspaper (and by any other suitable means) whenever we:

  • notify a new Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
  • de-notify all or part of an existing SSSI

You can find more information about Scotland’s protected areas or visit SiteLink to view and download information on designated sites across Scotland.
