Privacy statement
Species on the Edge is a four-and-a-half year partnership programme of conservation and community engagement which aims to secure a future for 37 threatened species found on Scotland’s coasts and islands.
NatureScot is the lead partner in the Species on the Edge partnership. The other partners are Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Bat Conservation Trust, Buglife, Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Bat Conservation Trust, Plantlife, and RSPB Scotland. The project receiving £4.2m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) towards the overall delivery budget of over £6.5m. Funding is also coming from NatureScot, the Scottish Government, the partner organisations and a number of other sources.
The programme officially started in November 2023 and will run until March 2027.

How we obtain your personal data
- We record the information using cameras
- You submit the information on a web form
- You submit the information via a written form
How we use your personal data
- If you have provided your data for the purpose of signing up to our mailing list, we will send you updates from the programme and opportunities to get involved.
- Images and videos taken at Species on the Edge events may be used for Species on the Edge promotional materials such as leaflets, posters and promotional videos, may be used in media releases sent to the press, and may be used on our website and social media channels.
- If you have signed up to be a volunteer, your name, phone number, and email address may be shared with partners to submit, share, and check the accuracy of biological records for recording and monitoring purposes. Personal data may be shared across the partnership to check your training records for the purpose of health and safety while volunteering for the programme.
Our legal basis for using your personal data
NatureScot has a statutory obligation to secure the conservation and enhancement of natural heritage and the Species on the Edge project contributes this aim. As a result we are processing your data in for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest.
Sharing your data with others
We will share with Species on the Edge partners only for use for Species on the Edge activity.
Your personal data rights
You have the right to:
• Ask for copies of information about you and be told why we’re using it;
• Have incorrect information about you corrected;
• Object to your information being used by NatureScot because of your specific situation;
• Restrict our use of information about you where:
- we are using incorrect information;
- our use of your information is unlawful and you want us to restrict its use rather than delete it;
- NatureScot doesn’t need your information any more but you need it for legal action;
- you have the right to object to information and you are using that right.

To make a request please write/email the Data Protection Officer, NatureScot, Battleby, Redgorton, Perth, PH1 3EW [email protected] giving us your name and contact details and a description of the data you want to see. We will respond as soon as we can and by 30 days after your request at the latest. We might ask you to provide some form of identification so we don't give data about you to the wrong person by mistake.
How long we keep your data
We will keep your data for the duration of the programme (until March 2027).
This means we will delete your personal data once we’ve finished the task we collected it for and any related audit or review period has passed.
