NatureScot Review 127: A morphometric comparison of the skulls of fossil British and extant European beavers, Castor fiber
NatureScot is considering the feasibility of re-introducing the European beaver to Scotland. One of the re-introduction criteria laid down by the IUCN guidelines is that the taxonomically closest population should be used. A comparison of fossil British beaver skulls with those of populations in Germany, France and Scandinavia showed that the Scandinavian populations are the closest. It is therefore that Scandinavian beavers should be used for any re-introduction into Scotland.
