NatureScot Archive Report 025: A preliminary comparison of outputs from the Ecological Site Classification (ESC) and the Native Woodland Model (NWM)
This study compared the results of two approaches to modelling site suitability for native woodland: the Ecological Site Classification (ESC) and the Native Woodland Model (NWM). ESC uses climate data, together with measures of soil moisture and soil nutrients. NWM does not directly use climate data, but instead uses information on current land cover, together with soil data, as a robust surrogate for climatic variables. The two approaches were compared in three study areas, Strathdon (Aberdeenshire), Glen Affric (north central Highlands) and the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. The report summarises the areas of agreement and disagreement between the two models, and discusses the potential uses of each.
