Research Report 1225 - Review of underwater video data collected around operating tidal stream turbines
Extraction of energy from tidal streams could, in the future, make a substantial contribution to Scotland's renewable energy generating capacity. However, there remains some uncertainty about how marine wildlife, such as fish, birds and mammals, will interact with operational turbines. In this project underwater video monitoring data from five early projects was examined to establish the suitability of such technology for detecting wildlife and describing their behaviour around the turbines.
In practice, the quality of video imagery, and hence its suitability for observing wildlife, varied substantially from project to project. To improve data quality and imagery, 36 recommendations on underwater video monitoring system planning and design, data collection, and data review and analysis, are provided alongside two protocols for systematic inspection of video footage.
