NatureScot Research Report 988 - A national orchard inventory for Scotland - area report for Scottish Borders
The National Orchard Inventory for Scotland aims to create a comprehensive orchard inventory for the nation, which will form the basis for addressing a number of issues linked to the decline of orchards over the last four decades and create a strong foundation for revival. The project to survey the orchards of Scotland has been successfully delivered (partially) through the use of an extensive network of local volunteers nationally, raising awareness of Traditional Orchards and their biodiversity, cultural heritage and potential local food value. The work has shown that Scotland still has a rich legacy of traditional orchards, as well as a large and growing number of newly established orchards across the country. A series of 12 Area Reports has been produced for each of the Local Authority Areas where detailed survey work has been undertaken.
