NatureScot Research Report 1209 - Heads Up for Harriers - Image Analysis 2015-2019
Heads Up for Harriers is a partnership project arising from the PAW Scotland Raptor Group in 2015. The project seeks to better understand the reasons for hen harrier Circus cyaneus nest failure through the use of nest cameras and to work with land managers to rectify these.
This report reviews over 2 million hen harrier nest camera images and identifies trends that influence survival to fledging.
Analysis indicates breeding success is likely to be highest on estates with no game shooting interests, where the male parent bird is in adult plumage (1yr ) and there is an abundance of passerine prey (small to medium birds are the primary prey, with meadow pipit accounting for 77% of bird prey items).
