NatureScot Commissioned Report 174: Evaluation of Local Nature Reserves
Local Nature Reserves are protected areas of land designated by a local authority because of special natural interest or educational value. There are 41 such reserves in Scotland.
This report explores the effectiveness of this land designation in Scotland. It identifies the successes and failures, especially in relation to broader policy areas such as greenspace, community participation, and environmental and social justice.
The report also looks at the reasons behind the low number of Local Nature Reserves in Scotland. It makes recommendations on how the value of this land designation can be enhanced and supported by NatureScot.
