Information Request – request relating to film and TV filming
Thank you for your information request, which we received on 20 June 2024. We have considered your request under the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 (‘the EIRs’).
Your Request
For the tax years 2014/15 to 2022/23 inclusive, please would you please fully disclose the following details, breaking the figures by year:
- How much revenue has been received by your organisation for services rendered to film and television productions? This could include location rental, permits and all other services related to film productions using your personnel or resources.
- Please outline the type of work or service rendered, in each case and disclose the revenue received for each type of service.
- How much has your organisation spent on facilitating such arrangements between 2014/15 to 2022/23, inclusive, broken down by year?
Our Response
Following a search of the information we hold we have 4 records of fees received during the period requested. Revenue and associated staff expenditure is set out in the table below.
The only charges to date in relation to filming are for locations: there are no other fees and NatureScot do not charge for staff time. NatureScot employees were not involved on site in these projects.
NatureScot has supported other filming (BBC Springwatch / Landward for example) but do not make a location charge where the output is deemed to have an educational or other value to the organisation.

How We Handled Your Request
We believe you have asked for environmental information as defined in the Environmental Information (Scotland Regulations 2004 (‘the EIRs’), so we are dealing with your request under those regulations. To be able to use the EIRs, we must apply an exemption under section 39(2) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (‘FOISA’). The Scottish Information Commissioner’s guidance recommends that public authorities apply this exemption to environmental information and handle request under the EIRs.
If you would like to find out more about the access to information legislation, there is a guidance booklet available on the Scottish Information Commissioner’s website.
