Protected area notices

News about formal changes and proposals to Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Natura sites and National Nature Reserves.

We may also publish the notices we post here on the Tell Me Scotland website. You can sign up to receive Tell Me Scotland email alerts whenever notices are published that will affect the area where you live or work.

We must publish a notice in a local newspaper (and by any other suitable means) whenever we:

  • notify a new Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
  • de-notify all or part of an existing SSSI

National Nature Reserve notices

Scottish Natural Heritage de-declared the following six National Nature Reserves (NNR) on Friday, 18 May 2018.  The formal notices and maps are available on the tellmescotland website (Select Scottish Natural Heritage from the 'Choose organisation' list on the left side).

The reserves being de-declared are:

Ben Lui
Kirkconnell Flow
Silver Flowe
Monach Isles
Rona and Sula Sgeir
Whitlaw Mosses

Peoples right of responsible access to the countryside is unaffected by these changes.

The withdrawal of the NNR accolade from these reserves does not affect any other designation. These sites remain legally protected areas for nature (as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Areas and/or Special Areas of Conservation).

You can find more information about all of Scotland's National Nature Reserves at and about SNH's other nature reserves at

If you have any queries or comments, please contact the SNH staff named on the relevant tellmescotland notice page(s) or Vicki Mowat on 0131 316 2659 or
