Framework for landscape policy

NatureScot is the Scottish Government's statutory adviser on landscape.

Our landscape remit is wide ranging. It draws on and complements NatureScot's efforts for nature and its enjoyment, recognising the connections between landscape, cultural heritage and history, recreation, geology, habitats and biodiversity.

The UK signed up to the European Landscape Convention in 2006, and it now provides a framework for our work for Scotland’s landscapes. This Council of Europe initiative highlights the importance of all landscapes and encourages greater input to their care and planning.

Our Landscape Policy Framework sets out in detail our approach to Scotland's landscapes and informs guidance we produce that relates to landscape.  The Policy Framework, which was published in 2005, is currently being revised following publication of the joint Landscape Position Statement by NatureScot and Historic Environment Scotland.
