Scotland’s Landscape Charter
This initiative focuses on what we can all do to ensure we pass on Scotland’s landscapes to future generations in the best possible health.
Scotland’s Landscape Charter challenges us to take action for landscape – to celebrate landscape, improve our understanding of it, and promote its care.
NatureScot developed the Charter with the Scottish Landscape Forum, a group of stakeholders with an interest in landscape.
The Scottish Landscape Alliance is currently undertaking an independent review of Scotland's Landscape Charter. Such a review has been welcomed by the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and the Islands and could lead to the publication of a refreshed charter that highlights Scotland's continued commitment to the European Landscape Convention, better reflects the significant changes in the Scottish Government's policy environment since 2010, and demonstrates commitment to sensitively managing the significant landscape change needed to address the climate and nature emergencies.

Why action is needed
Scotland’s landscapes are unparalleled in Europe, thanks to their richness, diversity and distinctiveness.
Among other things, our landscapes:
- underpin our tourist industry
- influence perceptions of many of our products and services
- provide inspiration for the arts
- contribute to our identity
- provide the distinctiveness and sense of place that we value and enjoy
How our landscapes change over time, in response to natural forces and society’s needs, is critical – particularly as we’re better able to shape our surroundings today than ever before. This change should be actively guided to ensure that our landscapes continue to enrich lives and benefit Scotland.

By signing the Charter, you demonstrate your concern and responsibility for Scotland’s distinctive landscapes. It says that you support the Charter’s vision and guiding principles, and that you’ll put into practice its suggested actions.
