A peaceful oasis

Only a few minutes from Aviemore, the birch woods of Craigellachie National Nature Reserve (NNR) sit above the A9. The reserve boasts birch woodland, open glades, tree-fringed lochs and slopes rising to a craggy summit. From the top viewpoint you can enjoy superb views of the Cairngorms.

This is a perfect destination for a walk in any season. In spring and summer, the silver birch trees are complemented by the constant insect activity and birdsong. The high-pitched mewing of common buzzards is a feature of the area. With luck, you’ll see them gliding high above the woods.

A network of paths cross the reserve. Take your pick of one of four routes and enjoy the peace and solitude.

You’re also welcome to visit the displays and peregrine viewing camera (summer only) in the youth hostel next to the reserve.
