Conservation orders

Scottish Ministers can issue nature conservation orders, land management orders and marine conservation orders, while courts can impose restoration orders.

Nature conservation orders are a means to protect from damage the natural features of specific areas of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Natura sites, or any other land considered to be of a special interest.

Land management orders are used to compel land managers to do work to conserve the natural features of an SSSI, Natura site or associated land.

Marine conservation orders are issued to ensure the conservation of Scotland’s nationally important marine protected areas.

Restoration orders – a criminal penalty – specify work needed to restore to their former condition damaged natural features in certain protected areas.
