Environmental assessment

Environmental assessment encompasses all statutory processes to identify, assess and mitigate impacts on the environment.

Scottish Natural Heritage gets involved in three types of environmental assessment:

  • Strategic Environmental Assessment – for plans, programmes and strategies
  • Environmental Impact Assessment – for projects and development proposals
  • Habitats Regulations Appraisal – for plans or projects affecting Natura sites

We’re also keen to help decision-makers, developers and others to carry out environmental assessments by:

  • providing easy access to the environmental data we hold, via SNHi data services
  • sharing guidance and good practice
  • being clear about how we deal with environmental assessments
  • providing advice on specific sites and topics
