NatureScot Commissioned Report 739: Inventory of coastal vegetated shingle in Scotland - field validation

The initial inventory drew together existing information sources on coastal vegetated shingle in Scotland and updated this through aerial photography interpretation (API) and limited field survey. This current project undertook field validation of the inventory and recorded the extent of Coastal Vegetated Shingle (a BAP priority habitat). It also mapped habitats in greater detail, to Habitats Directive Annex I types and specifically to broad shingle classes developed by NatureScot. The work revealed that the extent of coastal vegetated shingle in Scotland is greater than previously thought. It also provides a uniquely detailed picture of the two Annex I coastal vegetated shingle habitats found in Scotland.
