NatureScot Commissioned Report 750: Piloting a Natural Capital Asset Index
‘Natural capital’ refers to the elements of nature that directly or indirectly produce value to people. This NatureScot commissioned study from 2010 provides a background to the development of Scotland’s Natural Capital Asset index (NCAi). The report discusses the selection of habitat categories for the index, the weighting of these habitats according to their associated ecosystem services, and investigates indicators that might be utilised. Given the complexities involved, the study was not able to achieve all of its initial aims, such as a ‘pilot’ of the NCAi. However, it did provide the foundation for the first NCAi, which was published in 2011.
