NatureScot Commissioned Report 740: Distribution of the pine marten (Matres martes) in Southern Scotland in 2013
This study builds on the findings of Commissioned Report 520 with which it should, ideally, be read. It investigates the distribution of the pine marten in Scotland south of the Central Belt. The survey methodology involved surveying 1km transects in woodland for marten scats (faeces), using DNA analysis to confirm their species of origin. The findings confirmed pine marten presence at four widely-spaced locations in southern Scotland. These populations are thought to have originated from both natural spread from the core population further north and from translocations and releases.
