NatureScot Commissioned Report 634: Visitor behaviour in sensitive woodland habitats – repeat camera survey at Boat of Garten Woods
Boat of Garten Wood is popular for dog walking, and is also home to capercaillie. In the last two years, people have been asked to keep dogs on a lead in the core part of the wood during the capercaillie breeding season. A baseline survey was carried out in 2011, and this report outlines the findings when the survey was repeated in 2013. It shows that in general, people are changing their behaviour and walking dogs responsibly. It is the first Scottish ‘before and after’ survey, using automatic cameras, to test whether dog walkers’ behaviour has changed in response to requests for responsible behaviour, as far as we are aware.
