NatureScot Commissioned Report 555: Basking shark satellite tagging project: post-fieldwork report
NatureScot and the University of Exeter initiated a research project in July 2012 to attach satellite tags to basking sharks in the areas around Coll, Tiree, Hyskeir and Canna. Large numbers of basking sharks are seasonally sighted foraging and engaging in social behaviours in these areas, indicating they may be important for key stages in the basking shark's life cycle. The tagging data obtained will give detailed insights in to the distribution, movements and behaviours of basking sharks. This report provides a summary of the deployment of the tags and presents some of the tracking data. Analysis of data will be reported separately.
