In 2014 NatureScot commissioned a diving survey of seabed habitats in the South Arran MPA, focussing on maerl beds and maerl gravel habitats, and sea grass beds. The report presents the results of the detailed biological observations made on these habitats. The survey confirmed for the first time that there are remnant patches of healthy maerl beds in the Clyde, with a continuous cover of live maerl. Most other known maerl beds in the Clyde have been severely degraded, primarily as a result of towed, bottom-contacting fishing activity.
