If you’re planning a survey of a protected species, you may wish to confirm your legal responsibilities with us first.
You may need a licence from us to undertake certain surveys. Any survey involving a protected species should also follow best practice.

If your survey has been commissioned to inform the granting of consent, your survey report should contain enough detail to let the relevant regulatory body make its decision. For example, you should give Forestry Commission Scotland all the information it needs to consider a felling licence application.
It should also be possible to use the report as supporting information for any licence application to NatureScot.
Where your proposals are likely to affect a protected species, you should assess the impacts and then design appropriate mitigation measures. Ensure that your species protection plan includes measures to minimise harm or damage and explains compensation measures where damage is unavoidable.
