Loch Sunart NCMPA - designation documents

Designated to protect serpulid aggregations, Loch Sunart NCMPA also safeguards an extensive flame shell bed and northern feather star aggregations.

Loch Sunart NCMPA complements an existing Special Area of Conservation. Together these designations help to protect some of Scotland’s most unique marine life.

A 2015 survey found that the loch’s small clusters of serpulids (organ pipe worms) had deteriorated significantly. This is believed to be a natural event, and we will continue to monitor the population.
