Harbour porpoise candidate Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

Public consultation on a suite of possible SACs to protect harbour porpoise in Scotland.

Following on from the public consultation led by Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Government have confirmed that the Inner Hebrides and Minches candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) for harbour porpoise has been submitted to the European Commission.

The cSAC is the largest protected area in Europe for harbour porpoise and covers over 13,800 km2 and supports over 5000 individuals.

The protected area will help maintain the favourable conservation status of harbour porpoise by providing protection to them and their habitats in Scottish waters.
