The John Muir Way stretches for 134 miles across Central Scotland, from Helensburgh in the west to Dunbar on the east coast. It was officially opened in April 2014.

This long distance route is designed to inspire local day trips as well as end-to-end use. It offers easy access to places of interest, public transport and accommodation along the way.

We commissioned the John Muir Way visitor survey to provide NatureScot and our partners with a baseline estimate of route usage. We were also keen to gather insights into the profile of path users, their experiences and their awareness of Scotland’s other long distance routes.

This report sets out and analyses the visitor survey data on usage of and attitudes towards the John Muir Way. It also recommends how best to design and carry out similar visitor surveys for other long distance routes.
