International biodiversity conference announced

09 May, 2019

Scotland’s nature agency NatureScot has welcomed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirming that Scotland will host a UN-backed international nature conference in Spring 2020.

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity issued a report earlier this week on the state of nature globally.

Chief Executive Francesca Osowska said:

“This international event marks a key milestone in defining the effort needed to sustain nature in the face of climate change and other pressures. Smaller countries can have a big impact when they take bold steps together – and Scotland is at the forefront through hosting this UN supported conference in Spring 2020.

“We know that decisive action now to protect and restore nature is vital in reversing the loss of biodiversity. It is also clear that enhancing and protecting our nature is part of the solution to the climate emergency.

“Scotland can be a beacon for the rest of the world through deploying the very best of its science and enterprise.”
