NatureScot Commissioned Report 518: Surveys of harbour (common) and grey seals in the Outer Hebrides and the Moray Firth in August 2011

The previous survey of harbour seals in the Outer Hebrides was carried out in 2008 which showed a small but continuing decline from the previous counts in 2006 and 2003. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the decline in the Outer Hebrides was continuing and if the recovery in the Moray Firth was being maintained.

Trotternish Ridge, in the north-east of the Isle of Skye, provides an important grazing resource for the local crofting community, whilst also representing an assemblage of upland plant communities, the nature conservation importance of which is recognised by its designation as an SSSI and SAC. This report presents the results of long-term monitoring of grazing and erosion on Trotternish Ridge from 1998 to 2010.
