Guidance on Local Landscape Designations

In this guidance document for local authorities, discover how policies have changed the context for local landscape designations and find practical guidance on refreshing your approach and reviewing these designations.

Of course, when we think of Scotland’s landscapes, we initially think of the beautiful and remote countryside, mountains and coastline for which Scotland is renowned. But the natural heritage found close to and within our towns is equally valuable. We must take an ‘all-landscape’ approach to Scotland’s landscapes.

Local landscape designations can therefore play an important role in promoting awareness of, pride in and care for our most valued local landscapes. And they can help to protect those landscapes that are most vulnerable.
