Wester Ross

Situated in the north-west Highlands, Wester Ross has a dramatic geological history. Shaped by glaciers, its majestic mountains rise up from an ever-changing coastline dominated by wave-battered cliffs and fjords that stretch inland for miles. Explore this wild, rugged landscape by following one of our suggested itineraries.

To find out more about the fascinating geology of the area, visit Knockan Crag. Learn about the events that shaped the landscape at the visitor centre, and see for yourself the dramatic result of two continents colliding at the Moine Thrust.

For some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Scotland, head to Torridon. Visit the Deer Museum to learn about the lives of wild red deer, and take a stroll around the Loch Torridon for a chance to see the local birdlife and perhaps even an otter.

Yet puncturing this rugged landscape, you’ll find long stretches of sandy beach, salt marsh estuaries and tranquil lochs. Follow the scenic road from Achnahaird Bay – a peaceful inlet fringed by dunes that’s great for a day on the beach – to Achiltibuie – a small crofting township renowned for its local art scene – over windswept moorland.
