'Creatures of the woodland identity chart’
My name is Helen Butler and I am an artist based in Lochgilphead. I got into pyrography (wood burning) in 2021 after being given a set for a Christmas present. I enjoy drawing animals and birds so I decided to make an identification chart for the woods. I wonder how many of these creatures you can spot on your woodland walk.

‘Woodland sculptures’
As you leave the carpark and start to walk down the footpath into this woodland, you could be entering another world of special sounds and smells. The canopied trees envelop you and give a sense calm and serenity.
This very special environment, which has survived for hundreds of years, is the home of so much wildlife - mammals, birds, insects, trees, flowering plants and beautiful lichens, varieties of toadstools, fungi and mosses – all playing their part to sustain and be sustained in this unique environment.
I have made three sculptural forms, an obelisk and two planters, which have surfaces decorated with animal, bird and plant forms, representing just some of the life which inhabits this beautiful woodland.

‘Otter in the sea forest’
I carved this sculpture in the spring time just as the buds were starting to bloom, and I imagined looking through the willow branches, here at Taynish, into the sea and finding the otter and the sea forest below.

'Taynish Woodland Residents’
Why don’t you take a wander along the winding path dappled by lush vegetation, and soak in the delightful woodland sights, sounds and smells. When you arrive at the Mill you will happen upon a sight to behold…!
A rare gathering of elusive critters joyfully celebrating the magical habitat they care lucky enough to call home!
