The peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland are special. Nowhere else in Britain, and possibly the world, is there such a large area of this type of peatland. Many areas are recognised as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
This strategy promotes the natural heritage of peatlands, as the beginning of a more co-ordinated approach to conserving this important habitat. This can go hand in hand with supporting the needs of local communities and the economy. The strategy recognises that peatlands are a place where people live and work and that the support of local communities is key.
This strategy is for everyone with an interest in peatlands. Whether you own a croft or a sporting estate or work for a public agency, you’ll find it very useful.
