Fens support a wealth of wildlife and often hold evidence of our human history. But these magical places, a cherished part of Scotland’s landscape, are one of our least understood habitats.
This handbook aims to raise awareness of fens and how they function, explain why fens must be managed and provide best practice guidance. It offers practical management techniques and also provides the science behind their use.
Case studies at the end of most sections give examples of how the principles and techniques described have been applied. Cautions about activities that might be legislatively controlled or could damage fen interests are also included.
The handbook is for anyone interested in fens or involved in fen management, creation or restoration from a practical, policy or planning perspective.
