Easter Ross
Just north of Inverness, Easter Ross boasts a rich Pictish history, as well as superb wildlife. Its peaceful woodlands, craggy headlands and the imposing Ben Wyvis provide a wealth of walking routes for all abilities. So why not follow one of our suggested itineraries to explore all this region has to offer?
Start your journey of Pictish discovery by heading to Groam House Museum. This gem hosts Pictish artefacts dating from around 800 AD, many found in nearby Rosemarkie – a charming village with a beautiful sandy beach that’s well worth a visit.
Among the region’s Pictish landmarks, visit an Iron Age fort atop Knockfarrel or head to Nigg for a fine example of a Scottish Pictish church. And, while in Nigg, take a stroll around Nigg Bay for excellent birdwatching.
If it’s more wildlife watching you’re after, make for Chanonry Point, the best place in Europe to see bottlenose dolphins! The Tollie Red Kites Visitor Centre also offers opportunities to view this magnificent bird of prey.
And why not end your visit with a tour of the Glenmorangie Distillery – experience all the stages of the whisky-making process, and of course taste a dram or two!
