East Lothian
Easily accessible from Edinburgh by car, bus or train, East Lothian is perfectly situated for a day out from Scotland’s capital. With opportunities to see spectacular wildlife, many paths for walkers and cyclists alike, and a rich history to explore, follow the itineraries in this leaflet to see something new in East Lothian every time you visit.
Boasting a 40-mile stretch of glorious coastline and picturesque rolling hills, East Lothian is a treasure trove for outdoor lovers. And, after completing some or all of the final 41-mile section of the John Muir Way, you can visit the birthplace of the man himself in Dunbar.
Some of Scotland’s best spots for seeing coastal wildlife are found in the region. Take a boat trip from North Berwick to see the internationally protected islands of the Forth. You won’t be disappointed –David Attenborough described the Bass Rock as ‘perfection’.
And, for the history buffs among you, the region’s many castles paint the vivid picture of the area’s history. It is even thought to be the birthplace of Scotland’s flag, the Saltire.
