Broad Habitat - Supralittoral Sediment

This is coastal land where the substrate is mud, sand or shingle situated immediately inland from the high water mark. It consists of strandlines, vegetated coastal shingle, sand dunes and machair. The typical zonation of habitats here is a narrow zone of shingle strandline along and just above the high water mark, a wider zone of sand dunes further inland, and, in many places in northern and western Scotland, areas of machair inland of the sand dunes.
