Natural Heritage Futures aims to guide the sustainable management and use of Scotland's nature and landscapes up until 2025.

Our programme's six national prospectuses cover:

  • farmland
  • coasts and seas
  • hills and moors
  • settlements
  • freshwater
  • forests and woodlands

Each prospectus describes:

  • what is distinctive to each region in Scotland
  • a vision for the natural heritage for 2025
  • objectives and actions required to pursue that vision.

There are also 21 documents for different parts of Scotland, each of which has its own distinctive character.

You should read each original prospectus from 2002 in tandem with the relevant update produced following our 2009 prospectus review.

You can also search for and view the national assessments used to inform the original prospectuses. Although now quite dated, they contain information that’s unavailable elsewhere.
