Our Chief Executive, Francesca Osowska has overall responsibility for managing the organisation including oversight of delivery of our undertakings to Government and the aspirations of our Corporate Strategy, and ensuring that Scottish Natural Heritage operates efficiently and effectively.

Francesca is the Accountable Officer for SNH. As such, she is responsible to the Scottish Parliament and to the Accountable Office of the responsible department for the resources under her control.

Jane Macdonald keeps our Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team informed so that they can make sound strategic decisions.

Jane draws on our business planning, allocations, budget management and reporting activities to produce timely and accurate management information.

It’s also Jane’s task to confirm that how we deliver our work and manage our finances is effective. This gives our Chief Executive and Board assurance that their obligations are being met.

Acting Director of Sustainable Growth

Robbie Kernahan’s role as Acting Director of Sustainable Growth (covering for Nick Halfhhide while on secondment) gives him oversight of four Activity Teams - Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Management, Sustainable Coasts and Seas and Supporting Good Development.

Robbie also oversees the operational and advisory activities of our local offices. His remit spans:

  • local partnerships
  • work with local authorities
  • Marine planning
  • Deer management
  • Agricultural policy
  • Forestry

Sally Thomas oversees the work of five Activity teams - Placemaking for People and Nature, Managing Nature Reserves, Biodiversity and Geodiversity, Marine Ecosystems and Protected Areas and Surveillance.  She also maintains an oversight of science across our four outcomes.

This allows Ross to help each area team to deliver its contribution to our current business plan.

Head of External Affairs

Jason Ormiston Head of External Affairs, SNH February 2020

Jason Ormiston has responsibility for the communications team who focus on the role of SNH to protect and promote Scotland’s nature.

The team cover:

  • social media,
  • design,
  • events and conferences,
  • stakeholder relationships,
  • internal communications

Jason also oversees the work of the Chief of Staff and the Executive Office team who lead on the support to our Chair, Board members and our Chief Executive.

Deputy Director of Business Services and Transformation

Stuart MacQuarrie has responsibility for finance, planning and performance and strategic outlook in managing delivery of SNH's Outcomes.  As part of SLT he leads on Corporate and Business Planning, resource allocations across SNH Outcomes, performance reporting and horizon scanning on strategic issues. Stuart works with the Director of Outcome 4 to drive transformation of our ways of working, and also leads the programme of work to diversify SNH's funding.
