Where lowland and highland meet

Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve (NNR) straddles the dividing line of the Highland Boundary Fault. It captures the best of both of Highlands and Lowlands.

There are woodlands and wetlands, scenic mountains and stunning wildlife. Whether you’re a keen naturalist of just want to enjoy a picnic on a lovely beach, Loch Lomond has everything.

Home to Scotland’s largest freshwater loch, the reserve also plays an important part in protecting species such as white-fronted geese and native oakwoods.

Soak up the fantastic views, or wander down to the loch shore to enjoy the rich wildlife of the Endrick Mouth. Listen out for the distinctive call of wintering geese flying in their constantly changing formations. Or watch the peaceful paddling of wigeon, teal and shelduck.

You can also enjoy a trip in an old-fashioned wooden ferry to wooded Inchcailloch island. A springtime carpet of wildflowers awaits, and birds dart from tree to tree. On Inchcailloch, take your pick of tranquil walks and explore the ancient kirkyard and burial ground festooned in velvety mosses.
